Using red blood cells labelled with 99mTc the phleboscintigraphic intraosseous pattern was determined in osteoarthritis of the knee. The study included quantification of the labelled red blood cells intraosseus disappearing. Comparison with the normal (contralateral) knee in patients with unilateral degenerative arthropathy of the knee  demonstrated that the tracer disappeared at the injection site more slowly  than it did from the abnormal side. Statistical analysis of phleboscintigraphic intraosseus data shows a significant correlation between the venous alterations of the superior tibial metaphysis and the severity of the cartilage lesions observed during surgical arthtrotomy.
